Centralized Logging and OCSLogger in Lync Server 2013

The Centralized Logging Service is a new feature in Lync Server 2013. It is an enhanced replacement for the OCSLogger and OCSTracer tools that were provided in previous releases. You can still use OCSLogger tool in Lync 2013. However, this would be a disregard to the excellent centralized tool (ClsController.exe). :)

I was little hesitant using the new logging tool (ClsController.exe) in Lync 2013, but I quickly realized the ability of the tool. Few things which I like most in the centralized logging;

  • You don't need to run logging tool on all of the nodes of the pool. You just need to run this tool on one server of the pool, and it'll capture logs from all nodes in the pool for selected scenario(s).
  • You don't need to know what all components you need to select for a particular scenario. Every scenario already has a package of components required for troubleshooting.

Simple step to capture the log using centralized logging in Lync 2013 :

  • By default ClsController.exe is installed under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\ClsAgent". You need to start Lync Management Shell and access the location "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\ClsAgent".
  • Type ClsController.exe -start -scenario IMAndPresence -Pools
  • Repro issue
  • Type ClsController.exe -start -scenario IMAndPresence -Pools
  • Type ClsController.exe -flush –pools
  • Type ClsController.exe -search -pools >log.txt

Eventually you would see the file Log.txt under the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\ClsAgent. Alternatively you can specify another place to save the log file in command ClsController.exe -search -pools >c:\log.txt. The output can be opened in snooper tool or notepad for further interpretation.

Alternatively you can still use OCSLogger.exe on Lync 2013. It can be used similarly as you used in Lync 2010. You need to install the debug tools, which you can find here...

By default, it'll be installed under following folder.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Lync Server 2013\Debugging Tools
